Your dream fishing charter can become a nightmare if the motion of
the boat makes you seasick or gives you motion sickness. Motion sickness
has many symptom's. It can make you nauseous, cause you to vomit, make
you dizzy as well as give you headaches and cold sweats. Seasickness can be mild,
but for some people it can be incapacitating. Motion sickness can
happen from traveling on a boat, in a car, airplane, train, or even on a
ride at an amusement park.
Tips to reduce the risk of becoming seasick:
- Be well rested before your charter. A poor nights sleep
or feeling tired can make you more susceptible to motion
sickness.
- Take antiemetic drugs. A number of medications are available to help prevent or treat motion sickness. Medicines for nausea are called antiemetic drugs. They include antihistamines such as Bonine and Dramamine
which are available over the counter. Scopolamine drugs come in pill or patch form and
will require a prescription. Most of the medications work by counteracting the effect of chemicals released by the brain during seasickness.
If you have any questions or take other medications be sure to talk to your doctor about which medications are best for you.
You may be limited by the other medications you are taking. Be
aware that Antihistamines can cause drowsiness as well as dry mouth and eyes. Because antihistamines block messages to the part of the brain that controls nausea and vomiting, taking a medication such as Dramamine works best if you take it before you get motion sickness.
For best results, take the pill the night before your trip and
one hour before you board the boat.
- Get fresh air. If you are feeling seasick, it can be helpful
if you go out to open air and look toward the horizon. Doing
this can help your eyes see the motion and send the correct signals to the brain.
These signals will coinside with what the inner ear is telling the brain
and may help relieve your motion sickness. Fresh air, especially wind blowing in your face,
often helps, as well as focusing on something other than the boat's motion.
The years of experience Capt. John has on the lake ensures a safe and bountiful fishing trip.
